The thematic field of our group is the "Homo oeconomicus".

I would say that the model of the rational, self-interested decision maker who maximizes his/her utility does not fit the reality. In general people are both rational and emotional. Therefore "homo oeconomicus" does not explain all existing perspectives. In our thematic field we should not adore or worship this out-dated model. It should be more a criticism on it. Research found out that people tend to share with others for social welfare. There is a tendency to distribute and allocate payoff in a group. People share with others but also trust other people. Hence, a new leitmotif in economics is needed, since not all people are selfish orientated.

My suggestion for a logo for our group would be either Dagobert Duck on a sign with a cross or the honourable merchant as presented next to this text.

My observation idea would be to conduct focus interviews with managers at all levels and across all functions about their understanding and criticism on the "homo oecominicus". The aim should be to gain an insight in the manager’s current situation, their organizational strengths and what they see as the opportunities for improvement.

What is the leitmotif in economic life: fighting or cooperation?

I think that the "homo oecomicus" does not exist in reality and is just an economic model driven by theory. The core of human motivation is interpersonal acceptance, to give devotion and to care about somebody. From neurobiological perspective we are designed for social resonance and cooperation. Research in cooperation which is based on game theory results in that trust creates trust, whereas distrust and rejection promote aggression.

What exactly is happiness?

I like to read articles about happiness that I find by chance in newspapers or journals. On the one hand, happiness is a goal of all human striving and on the other hand it is just chance or fate. It is obviously an ambiguous term, but certainly a concept that at first can be classified into the field of philosophy. Epicure, the Greek philosopher, introduced hedonism. He mentioned that the pleasure is itself the content of happiness. From the biological perspective happiness arises in our mind by the release of hormones and neurotransmitters. Moreover there exist already a science of happiness and even an economy of happiness.

Today was presentation day of the foundations of philosophy of science. Our own presentation worked well. Thanks to all fantastic group members. We did quiz "How wants to become a scientist" as warming up ;-) ... Also the other presentations "Scientific knowledge and reality: From reality theory and back" as well as "Science as process - dynamics of scientific knowledge and its social embedding" were ok.

Professor Peschl asked: What kind of world view do you have? Hopefully I can claim to have a out-of-the box world view. Moreover he mentioned that we do not see the things themselves and do not have access to the border beyond. So we use experiments in order to get some explanations how something works ...

Although it is Rector’s day our group came together in order to ensure that our presentation for Monday obtains some fine-tuning. For the red-line through the slides of “What science is”, “Scientific explanation”, and “Explanation in science” we prepared a common introduction as well as a common conclusion. We fixed the settings and fixed who should take over which task. For example, we adapted the quiz with a real selection round and decided who should be the candidates and what jokers should be used. Moreover we also talked through the other experiments and role plays. I was a little bit confused because I was asked to play a man who tells a little girl that he cannot be pregnant due to the fact of taking anti-baby-pills everyday. Finally I agreed to do it because the short role play should explain the irrelevance of Hempel’s covering law model of explanation. At the end all groups members promised to do some further preparation work and fine-tuning for a great performance in the classroom. Hopefully I have nevertheless a nice weekend!

This time we met to discuss our presentation outline more in detail. So the meeting last longer than the week before. The three subgroups presented their prepared preliminary slides and got feedback of the other group members. My idea was accepted to perform a quiz with the name “Who wants to be a scientist”. The other groups also brought beside the content some suggestions how to make a working atmosphere less tense. We had some discussions concerning how to implement small experiments but more or less I did not observe any major disputes. Afterwards we had also a meeting with one part of our lecturer where we presented our outline. To sum up, it was proposed that we should refer in the presentation to our discipline, to look for interaction with the audience and to find a red line through our presentation. Ok. Let’s do it!

Today’s group meeting was quite efficient. Main goal was to discuss what and how we should design our presentation. The most important points out of the literature I summarized in some Power Point slides which were used as handout. Marion suggested to build up three subgroups of two and to prepare three distinct parts for the content as well as the creative part. Katrin agreed to be the team leader or the chairwoman of our group who is responsible for consolidation and communication. Bernhard and I choosed the chapter “What is science?” for preparation until next Monday. We discussed shortly to implement in our part a quiz in the form of “Who wants to be a millionaire”. I am satisfied to do some creative staff. It seems to to brighten up my day!

By reading the relevant literature of the foundations of philosophy of science I also found a practical answer to the question why the palm tree in my living room does not look anymore very nice. Actually the answer is a general law of nature. The plant is not exposed at the moment to direct sunlight. Since plants need sun for photosynthesis, it should not me wonder why the originally green leaves are getting brown. Now I moved my palm tree to a sunnier place with the hope that it can thrive and prosper in a better way. This would mean that I make now an inductive prediction.

Today the first session of Philosphy of Science took place. Professor Peschl’s introduction was promising. For me this day focused mainly on organization. Groups were formed for a presentation in two weeks; literature was delivered by a group member; registration on the lecturer’s homepage was completed. Our group arranged a meeting for designing the presentation on Thursday 04.03.2010. Until then I have to read the respective material. The two guys of the observation group announced that they will also come. We will see how things go on!

Siberia's hot spot

In the moment, we have in Austria a really hot summer with high temperatures but also in Siberia the average maximum temperature (in June) is about 20 degree Celsius. As I was thinking about a holiday-trip to Siberia, I found in FORTUNE magazine an interesting article about the hot technology sector in Russia. In my opinion, for most of us, Siberia brings to mind images of isolation and snow. But a former centre for Sorviet scientisits is rapidly becoming an important location for software and technology services. Akademgorodok, or Academy Town, in Novosibirsk is being called "Silicon Forest" because it is attracting well-known technology firms such as IBM and Intel.

Built in the early 1960s as a place where scientists could gather away from major cities, Akademgorodok was pratically abandoned by the 1990s. Many young scientists left for the US and Europe. At about the same time, Western firms began to discover that the region was a source of employees with strong academic backgrounds - and low salaraies. Russia follows China and India as an outsourcing destination for software programming, and the local economy, at Akademgordok is growing at a rate of 15 per cent a year. Steve Chase, president of Intel Russia at Academy Town, told FORTUNE magazine what employees at his company say: "If you have something tough, give it to the Americans. If you have something difficult, give it to the Indians. if you have something impossible, give it to the Russians."

Strategic Incompetence

I read in THE WALL STREET JOURNAL about an effective work-avoidance method called "strategic incompetence". If you don't want to do something, you act so helpless that someone feels the need to save you. When you're asked to make a coffee, for example, you stand in front of the machine, spending a lot of time looking confused and asking questions about how much coffee to put in, what kind of filter is needed and so on. If you play your cards right, someone - usually a woman - after a few minutes of watching your pathetic performance, will say, "Here, let me do that."

By all means she will win the big prize: the privilege of making coffee for the rest of her working life. Even those people who don't volunteer their help sometimes fall into the trap: the boss, noticing that you are wasting valuable company time looking stupid in front of the coffee machine, asks someone to help. It is called the magic weapon of office life: you get out of an unpleasant task without ever looking uncooperative. The one, that helped you, will hate you forever, but the one has learned a valuable lesson: the art of being intelligent at work is knowing when you not to be too competent.

1997 Matura – 2007 Reunion

Maturajubiläum: Als wäre es erst gestern gewesen

Der „Spirit“ von Tanzenberg lockte Schülerinnen und Schüler des Maturajahrganges 1997 am Samstag, den 2. Juni 2007 zur ehemaligen Schule, die nach dem Umbau für uns kaum wieder zu erkennen war. Nur staunen über das, was sich in letzter Zeit an dem Ort getan hat, wo einem vor ziemlich genau zehn Jahren die „Reife“ in Form des Maturazeugnisses bescheinigt wurde konnten immerhin 15 von 23 Gesichtern des einstigen Klassenverbandes. Sehr freundlich wurden wir von Direktor Eduard Hirschberger begrüßt, der uns sofort wiedererkannte. Als Schulleiter wusste er zu erzählen, dass die Sanierung des Schulgebäudes mit einigen Hürden verbunden war. Mit dem jetzigen Rektor des Marianums Herbert Kulnik, der uns bisher nicht persönlich kannte, wurde in der Seminarkirche ein kurzer gemeinsamer Wortgottesdienst gefeiert. Während sich einige der Kolleginnen und Kollegen nur wenig veränderten, konnten wir beim Rundgang in der Schule, unter anderem mit der Besichtigung des neuen Turnsaales und neuer Klassenzimmer, nur mehr wenig Altes wieder erkennen. Als einer der wenigen Lehrer, die uns in unserer Schulzeit begleiteten, erschien zur Freude aller als Überraschungsgast Oberstudienrat Günter Harmina.

Das absolute Highlight beim Durchstreifen des Marianums war das Besteigen des Turmes mit dem wunderschönen Rundblick um Tanzenberg. Dabei wurde einem klar, in welchem prächtigen, grünen Umfeld man acht seiner Schuljahre verbrachte. Danach lud uns Rektor Kulnik dankenswerter Weise in seine Prälatur zu köstlichem Wein und verschiedenen Sorten wunderbaren Reindlings. Hier fand sich auch Zeit um festzustellen, dass viele von uns entweder bereits fleißig arbeiten oder zumindest am Ende einer Ausbildung stehen. Der offizielle Teil wurde dann mit einem gemeinsamen Foto im Innenhof des Marianums abgerundet, bevor es zum gemütlichen Beisammensein beim nahe gelegenen Kollerwirt ging. Hier gab es vor allem die Gelegenheit alte Geschichten und gemeinsame Erlebnisse wieder in Erinnerung zu rufen. An vieles konnte man sich erinnern, aber es gab auch Aha-Erlebnisse bei längst Vergessenem. Da sich nach einem regen Austausch unsere Wege auch wieder in allen Richtungen trennten, wurde ein baldiges Wiedersehen im Sommer 2007 vereinbart. Das Schöne nach einem solchen Maturatreffen ist, dass man das Gefühl hat, die Schulzeit in Tanzenberg wäre erst gestern gewesen, obwohl man lange Zeit nicht mehr zusammen war.

obwohl ich am Ende meines Studiums bin, bin ich momentan ein wenig verzweifelt.

Ich suche nämlich noch dringend Teilnehmerinnen und Teilnehmer für meine Diplomarbeit. Am Mittwoch, den 30. Mai 2007, führe ich das Experiment im RESOWI Zentrum der Uni Graz auf E3 zu den Zeiten 15:15 / 15:45 / 16:15 / 16:45 Uhr durch.

Paris - the magic attraction?

„Die Stadt an der Seine zieht magisch an – mit ihrer Romantik und unvergleichen Lebensart.“ Schöne Worte – höchstwahrscheinlich von einem Marketingexperten. Mein Resümee nach einem Paris-Wochenende hingegen lautet: Die Preise sind so schwindelerregend wie der 125m hohe Eifelturm und die Touristenwarteschlangen bei Bootsrundfahrten oder beim Triumphbogen können einem auf die Nerven gehen.

Paris ist viel zu kosmopolitisch, um es auf einen Stil festlegen zu können. Es herrscht Vielfalt. Die endlos langen Boulvards wie die Champs-Élysées, die kleinen Gassen sowie die Mischung aus Glanz und Romantik wie die Galeries Lafayette. Das Nachtleben ist wirklich einzigartig pulsierend. Die Bars sind gigantisch stylisch. Es empfiehlt sich in Damenbegleitung unterwegs zu sein, sonst wird einem mancherorts, um die Publikumsmischung aufrecht zu erhalten, der Eingang verwehrt.

Belgium is Europe’s Beer-Country No.1

Vor hundert Jahren gab es in Belgien 3.200 Brauereien. Heute gibt es nur noch 109 Brauereien, die immerhin 350 Biersorten erzeugen, die unter mehr als tausend Markennamen vertrieben werden. Auf der Spur von 350 Biersorten kann man so manch kuriose Sitte kennen lernen. In der „Dulle Griet“ am Vrijdagmarkt in Brüssel sollte man ein „Kwak“ bestellen.

Das Bier wird in einem Kolbenglas serviert, das an einem Holzständer befestigt ist. Das Glas wird im Holzständer an die Lippen geführt und der Effekt ist etwa so, als ob man ungeübt aus einem gläsernen Stiefel trinkt. So manches „Kwak“-Glas würde man als Tourist mitgehen lassen, wenn nicht der Wirt der „Dulle Griet“ eine originelle Methode gefunden hätte, um dem vorzubeugen. Wer ein „Kwak“ bestellt, wird erst einmal aufgefordert, einen Schuh auszuziehen. Die Schuhe kommen in einen eigenen Korb, der per Seilzug an die Decke gehievt wird. Erst wenn das Getränk bezahlt und das Glas abgegeben worden ist, bekommt man das Schuhpfand zurück.

Chocolate makes you happy!

Schokolade macht bekanntlich glücklich und ist eine der kulinarischen Köstlichkeiten Belgiens. Ich bin durch Brüssel gestreift und habe mir die verschiedensten Schaufenster der Schokoladehersteller angeschaut. Im Planète Chocolat habe ich eine heiße Schokolade gekostet und die hausgemachten Delikatessen aus 100 Prozent Kakao betrachtet. Anschließend bin ich zum Grand Sablon gebummelt. Dort bewunderte ich das Schaufenster von Pierre Marcolini. In Glasgefäßen werden Kakaobohnen in den unterschiedlichsten Farben nach ihrer Herkunft aufbewahrt: Südamerika, Afrika, Trinidad.

Mit diesem neuerworbenen Wissen ging ich hinunter bis auf den Grand Place. Dort befindet sich die Chocolaterie Godiva. Ich habe den Duft der Schokolade, der einen selbst schon verzaubert, genossen. Danach ging ich in die St. Hubertusgalerien. Die königlichen Galerien beherbergen Neuhaus, eine der beste Chocolaterien der Stadt, wo ich eine kleine Auswahl an Pralinien (100gr) für 14 Euro mitgenommen habe. Beim Verzehr dieser Schokolade wurden bei mir einige Glückshormone im Gehirn freigesetzt. Schließlich kam ich zur Kenntnis, dass man zweifelsohne viele Glücksmomente in Brüssel erleben kann.
